Shakira receives French knighthood
Shakira had a big weekend in France. She received a French knighthood
and accepted the top prize at the NRJ Music Awards all in one day in Cannes.
The Colombian singer received her Chevalier in the Order Arts and
Letters medal from French Minister of Culture and Communication Frederic Mitterrand on Saturday. Later that day, she accepted the NRJ Award of Honor. Shakira, 34, was born Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll in Barranquilla, Colombia, and was just 14 when
she released her first album, "Magia." Her
popularity rose in Latin America and Spain with the 1995 release of "Pies Descalzos" and the 1998 release of her
album "Donde Estan los Ladrones?" In 2001, she sold more than 13 million copies worldwide of her first English language
album "Laundry Service," which contained the hit single "Whenever, Whereever."
