Timba Swing
By Oski Gonzalez
Timba Swing is one of South Florida's hottest Latin bands on the music
scene; they perform at the world famous Tobacco Road every other month and can be seen in the coolest venues and festivals.
They mix traditional Salsa and Timba with Soul, Funk and Jazz to give them a very unique sound. The group was founded by Cuban
pianist and singer Boris Deiz in 2009. The band showcases some amazing musicians that are well respected in the world of Latin
music.
I had a chance to talk music and life with Diez before his set at Jolly Jam Holiday Music Festival in Miami.
Diez was born in Cuba and always loved American music as much as the traditional Cuban music. He would listen to bands like
Earth Wind and Fire, James Brown and The Commadores. He said that music made him dance and loved the way they would mix lots
of instruments to make a simple sound. He always knew he would be a musician and wanted to have a big band. This was something
that he just knew would happen.
I asked him how he likes life in America. Diez stopped, took a deep breath
and said I love America. I really miss Cuba and one day I would love to go and play there and see all of my old friends and
family. I live in Miami, says Diez and it is a lot like Cuba. We have everything here and sometimes I forget that I am in
America because it feels like home. I asked Diez where did he see his band going in the next 5 years.
I
just finished recording a full length album that I want the world to hear and embrace. He said ,they don't call them that
anymore, but I do. I wanted to record a record that you can listen to the whole recording from beginning to end. Nowadays everyone
is just downloading songs and you only hear a single. This new CD... OK I called it a CD will be available at our live shows
and at www.timbaswing.com by the end of February 2012. Again, he says and grabs
my arm... I want the world to hear this music that Timba Swing is making. Diez is a big tall dude so I got scared when he
grabbed me. In a humble voice he says he wants to thank all the members in his band and all the musicians that worked on Timba
Swing's new album. I could not have done it without them.
